Across the major contemplative traditions — Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain, and the Islamic Sufi tariqas — the deliberate use of sustained vocal sound as a transformative practice has been continuous for at least three millennia. The most archaically attested example is OM (also written *AUM*), described in the *Mandukya Upanishad* (c. 800 BCE) as the sound from which the universe is generated, sustained and returned.
When properly produced, OM is not a single tone. It is a sequence of three vowels (A–U–M) that travel resonantly through three distinct cavities of the human body — abdomen, chest, skull — terminating in the prolonged nasal hum that vibrates the cranial sinuses against the cribriform plate.

The Solfeggio Story — What's True and What's Marketing
The modern "Solfeggio frequencies" — 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 Hz — are everywhere in contemporary sound-healing culture, often advertised as ancient Gregorian frequencies that were "hidden" by the Catholic Church and rediscovered by the herbalist Joseph Puleo in the 1970s through numerological analysis of the *Liber Usualis*.
A careful examination is necessary. The honest accounting:
What is true. Sound-induced therapeutic effects are real. Specific frequencies can produce measurable effects on heart-rate variability, EEG, and subjective state. The Gregorian chant tradition demonstrably produces parasympathetic dominance and reduces cortisol (Cogo-Moreira et al., 2014). The therapeutic use of tone has a continuous, documented history.
What is fabricated. There is no historical evidence whatsoever that Gregorian chant used the specific frequencies 396, 417, 528 Hz. Mediaeval music was tuned by relative interval, not absolute frequency. The standardisation of A=440 Hz did not even occur until 1939. The "hidden Solfeggio" claim was generated in the 1970s through numerological manipulation of unrelated source material and has no manuscript support.
What remains an open empirical question. Whether the specific frequencies, *regardless of their fictional history*, have particular therapeutic or consciousness-altering properties. Some preliminary studies (Akimoto et al., 2018) on 528 Hz suggest mild stress-reduction effects; the literature is small and the mechanism unclear. The honest position is: try them, observe your own response, do not believe the marketing about ancient origins.
The distinction matters because credulity in any one direction discredits the entire field. The therapeutic value of sound is well established. The historical claims about specific Solfeggio numbers are not.

Mantra — The Engineering of the Mind by Sound
The Sanskrit word *mantra* breaks down as *manas* (mind) + *tra* (instrument, tool). A mantra is, etymologically, a tool made of sound for shaping the mind. The Vedic and Tantric traditions developed this technology with extraordinary precision over two-and-a-half millennia.
The operative principles, surviving in both Hindu and Buddhist lineages:
1. Specific phonemes produce specific neurophysiological effects. The labial *Ma* engages the parasympathetic nervous system. The hard palatal *Ka* sharpens attention. The sustained *Ng* sets up resonance in the upper cranial cavities and is associated with the production of insight states.
2. Repetition entrains the nervous system. A mantra repeated 108 times (the traditional count, related to Vedic astronomical ratios) over 10–15 minutes produces measurable EEG coherence and reduction in default-mode network activity — the same network whose hyperactivity is associated with rumination and depression.
3. Meaning is secondary to vibration. Hindu and Buddhist traditions both insist that the operative power of mantra lies in its sound-structure rather than its translatable meaning. This is why tradition holds that mantras must be received in their original phonetic form. If you wish to test the therapeutic effects of sound on your own nervous system without the marketing claims, the following protocol synthesises what is best supported by evidence:
Daily core practice (15 minutes). Sustained OM chanting at a comfortable low pitch, on the exhalation, for 5–10 cycles per minute. Allow the M-hum to vibrate behind the eyes and across the upper palate. Stop if dizzy.
Weekly addition. A 20-minute Tibetan singing-bowl session, gong bath, or recorded chant (Gregorian, Vedic, or Sufi *dhikr*). Use good headphones or, preferably, attend live — physical sound vibrating the body produces effects that recorded audio only partially replicates.
Optional experiment. Try the modern "Solfeggio" tones at 528 Hz for 15 minutes daily for a month. Keep a brief journal. Form your own opinion based on your own data, not on the marketing or the dismissals.
What to track. Sleep quality, baseline anxiety, heart-rate variability if you have a wearable, and the quality of attention upon waking. Most people report noticeable shifts within three weeks. If you do not, no harm done — and you will have a calibrated personal answer to a question most people only ever argue about.
